Where is ZDayZ?

The host location for ZDayZ is Fontana Village Resort in the scenic NC mountains. Fontana Village is approximately 90 miles west of Asheville, NC on NC-28 near Fontana and Robbinsville, NC. The large resort grounds and proximity to Highway 129 make it the perfect spot for a sports car meet.

What is Deal's Gap?

"Deals Gap is a popular and internationally famous destination for driving enthusiasts (of motorcycles and sport cars), as it is located along a stretch of two-lane road known as "The Dragon" or the Tail of the Dragon. The 11-mile stretch of the Dragon in Tennessee is said to contain 318 curves. Some of the Dragon's sharpest curves have names like Copperhead Corner, Hog Pen Bend, Wheelie Hell, Killboy (formerly Shade Tree) Corner, Mud Corner, Sunset Corner, Gravity Cavity, Beginner's End, and Brake or Bust Bend. The road segment earned its name from its curves resembling the shape of the "Dragon". The stretch bears the street name "Tapoco Road" in North Carolina and "Calderwood Highway" in Tennessee and is signed entirely by U.S. 129. State Route 115 is included on maps, and is the name used by Tennessee Department of Transportation for highway contracts.

Since part of the road is also the southwestern border of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, there is no development along the 11-mile stretch, resulting in no danger of vehicles pulling out in front of those in the right of way. It mostly travels through forested area and there are a few scenic overlooks and pull-off points along the route. The speed limit on the Dragon was 55 mph prior to 1992; it was reduced to 30mph in 2005. A documented presence of law enforcement on the Tennessee portion has dramatically increased in 2007 and 2008." ~Wikipedia.org

What is Tail of the Dragon?

What happens at ZDayZ?

ZDayZ activities are organized to attract all kind of car lovers. Though the primary focus is driving, other events allow attendees to show their cars, discuss modifications, learn about detailing, drive their cars on some of the best roads in the country, attend a drive-in movie, drive a TSD rally, participate in a poker run, and much more.

Back to questions

Why is the event 4 days long?

Simply put, three days was not long enough. For many attendees, this is their biggest event of the year, so we made it bigger :) Anything less than four days would not allow attendees to get the most out of the ZDayZ activities and driving the local roads (including multiple trips along the infamous Tail of the Dragon!). Four days allows visitors to enjoy more roads, and also allows us to organize more activities for those who want to participate in a little more than just driving! So, to sum it up, Thursday is a day to scope out the place and get settled in without being rushed for any one event. There will be no giveaways or prizes on Thursday. So, if you can not show up to ZDayZ until Friday, you will not miss any giveaways or prizes. You will miss, however, some smaller events (see Events on Thursday), time to enjoy the area, seeing your old ZDayZ friends that day, and meeting new friends one day sooner. We understand that not everyone can make it to ZDayZ Thursday due to work or family obligations, therefore Thursday is more or less a relaxing, free, easy day.

Back to questions

Is there a charge to attend?

Yes. Information about registration can be found on our Registration page. General registration includes dinner both Friday and Saturday night as well as entry to all activities, with the exception of the Car Show. Registrants will also receive a free ZDayZ 2010 shirt. Additional shirts will be available for purchase at the event or online at time of pre-registration. There is a separate entry fee for the Car Show on Saturday, but only for those who actually enter their car in the show. We make every effort to keep all ZDayZ costs low so we can pass the savings along to ZDayZ attendees. We feel you will be hard-pressed to find an event for a better value given the total expenditure you incur attending ZDayZ.

Back to questions

How do I book a room or cabin for the event?

Contact Fontana Village Resort reservations by calling 1-800-849-2258 or by visiting their web site. Let them know you are making a lodging reservations for ZDayZ to receive our group rate discount! In the event that Fontana Village is completely booked, please refer to our Lodging page for overflow lodging in the surrounding area.

Where can I find more information about ZDayZ?

HERE! The ZDayZ web site is the best source of information regarding the ZDayZ Event. If you have a specific question about ZDayZ, you may email us directly by going to our Contact page. Finally, the organizers of ZDayZ frequent many of the Z-car forums on the web.  When possible, we will post news and answer questions on those forums. You may also use your search engine and look up "ZDayZ", there is a plethora of positive feedback on ZDayZ. YouTube.com is also a good place to find out what ZDayZ offers. Most of the videos are of ZDayZ attendees driving their cars on the roads. We do not advocate unsafe driving!

Back to questions

May I bring a Fairlady Roadster to ZDayZ?

Isn't the Fairlady where it all started from? We may even have separate classes for Fairladies in the ZDayZ Car Show held on Saturday. Many of the attendees may never have seen a Fairlady, so bring 'em if you have 'em.

Back to questions

May I bring a G35 or G37 to ZDayZ?

Absolutely! We consider the G35 and the G37 a close cousin to the 350Z and 370Z. We welcome all G owners to participate in ZDayZ. We even have separate classes for the G series in the ZDayZ Car Show on Saturday.

Back to questions

May I bring a GTR to ZDayZ?

Why not? We have many friends that have either traded in their Z for a GTR or bought one outright. GTR owners are still part of the ZDayZ family. We may even have separate classes for GTRs in the ZDayZ Car Show on Saturday.

Back to questions

How much does the registration cost for the event?

The cost of registration has not gone up in four years. We are charging $60 for a single registered attendee, $45 for a guest that must be sponsored by the registered attendee, $35 for a Friday-only registration, and $45 for a Saturday-only registration. We are simply trying to cover our expenses for the event. We have bundled all the costs into one price for attendees and for the ease of those volunteers running the registration desk. Fontana Village charges us for sunshine if it is sunny and for rain when it is raining. Seriously, we have to rent the recreation hall where we all eat, the P. A. system so that we can announce, the storage room to have the prizes delivered on site and stored. There are registration supplies to purchase, with an event of this size there are many expenses that we incur and for that we have to cover those expenses.

Why does the Car Show event cost $10 to enter?

Mostly all of our attendees enjoy the car show, whether they enter the Car Show or they simply admire those who are competing. Each year roughly half of the cars onsite participate in the show. So, for this activity, we decided to have only the Car Show participants fund the show. We feel that the cost of the Car Show should be placed only on the participants of the Car Show. The entry fee helps cover car show specifics such as:
  • Trophies
  • Refreshments for the Judges (we need to keep them happy)
  • T-shirts
  • Professional Director to coordinate the Car Show
  • Extra giveaways provided by ZDayZ

Besides, a mere $10 for a Car Show, now that's a bargain! Check out our Gallery '07 to view some of the trophies we gave away. We did not have the Car Show in '08 and actually noticed a decrease in attendance. Therefore, we held a Car Show '09 and it is back in '10, and it will better than ever!

Back to questions

Do you really donate most of your proceeds to charity?

Yes, we DO donate most of our proceeds to charity. Our charity for '10 is Hope for Families.

In 2009 we were able to donate $3780.77 to Hope for Families. "Hope for Families is a non-profit organization that is located in Graham County, North Carolina to help victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. Sexual assault and domestic violence are issues that can affect anyone. We ask that you use this site to become informed about these issues so that we as a nation can help stop the cycle of abuse." - Hope for Families

In 2008 we raised enough money to donate $800 to Partnership Against Domestic Violence.

Back to questions

Is ZDayZ a non-profit organization?

Technically we aren't a non-profit organization, but we act as if we are one. None of the staff receive paychecks from the ZDayZ event. We donate our time because we believe in the event and how it brings all of the enthusiasts together whole-heartedly.

"The staff generally goes out to eat once after the ZDayZ event as a "thank you" for all their thankless hard work, (however, we did not in 2009 due to being exhausted.) The staff does not receive any gas or travel reimbursements whatsoever, not to mention any pay. This is all volunteer work. Last year staff logged over 2,000 miles plus used 6 tanks of gas in May alone for ZDayZ. Not one cent went back into our pockets, this was part of our donation towards the event.  The staff usually gets a few leftover shirts out of the event, but we wear them everywhere, so it is more advertisement than anything else. The only real reason is the satisfaction of all the Zs, Gs, Fairladies, GTRs, and people coming together as a "family" and having fun." ~Bryan Settle, your ZDayZ CEO
